Germany is full of amazing cities, each with its own unique charm. Are you looking for fairytale castles, buzzing nightlife, or just a really good sausage? Well, there’s a German city waiting for you whichever you pick. Maybe even all three combined, who knows. But which one should you visit? Fear not! This guide will help you find your perfect German destination. Here are a couple of them more in depth, if you’re visiting Germany for the first time!
Berlin – For the Cool, Artsy, and a Little Bit Chaotic
Berlin is like that friend who shows up to brunch wearing mismatched socks and somehow makes it look cool. The city is a mix of history, street art, and a nightlife scene that will keep you awake for days (literally). It’s perfect for:
- History buffs (Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, museums galore).
- Night owls (legendary clubs like Berghain – though I personally recommend Fritzclub – I spent some looovely nights there).
- People who enjoy weird and wonderful things (Tempelhofer Feld—a former airport turned public park).
- Vibe: Edgy, multicultural, and full of hipsters drinking Club Mate. Which is, in fact, the best drink there is and yes, I’ve important it several times by now. It’s one of the things I miss quite a lot here in the UK. If you want to try it (or, believe me, have more once you’re back), here’s their UK shop! This is a genuine recommendation. I drank countless of their flasks during university and after. Be warned though. Chances are high, that you won’t like your first bottle – but love the second.
- Must-Try: Döner Kebab (yes, it’s technically Turkish, but Berlin made it famous).
Munich – For the Beer Lovers and Lederhosen Enthusiasts
Ah, Munich—where people wear traditional Bavarian outfits unironically and where most of our German stereotypes come from. This city is the heart of Oktoberfest, but it offers way more than just beer. With its beautiful parks, stunning old town, and proximity to the Alps, Munich is perfect for those who like a bit of class with their lager. It’s perfect for:
- Beer lovers (obviously).
- People who appreciate good engineering (BMW Museum).
- Those who enjoy order and cleanliness (yes, even the subway is spotless).
- Vibe: Elegant but fun—like a rich uncle who knows how to party.
- Must-Try: A Maß (1-liter beer) and a Weißwurst (white sausage) with sweet mustard.
Hamburg – For the Maritime Souls and Music Lovers
If Berlin is the rebellious teenager of Germany, Hamburg is the effortlessly cool older sibling. A port city with a rich musical history (The Beatles started here!), Hamburg has a mix of elegance and grittiness. It’s also my favourite city in Germany. It’s perfect for everything and everyone, because it’s just the best – but here’s a few more impressions:
- Music lovers (live music everywhere, plus the famous Elbphilharmonie).
- Fans of waterfront views (walk along the Landungsbrücken).
- People who want a little bit of chaos (Reeperbahn—Germany’s most famous red-light district).
- Vibe: Classy but with a pirate soul.
- Must-Try: Fischbrötchen (a fresh fish sandwich) by the harbor. Oh, and a Franzbrötchen! Two very different things! One’s a breadroll with a fish, one’s a desert. Not containing a Franz, though.
Cologne – For the Fun-Loving and Carnival-Goers
Cologne is the friendliest city in Germany. It’s known for its massive Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), a local beer called Kölsch, and a wild Carnival celebration where dressing like a banana in public is totally normal. Perfect for:
- People who love to party (Cologne Carnival is legendary).
- Fans of impressive architecture (Cologne Cathedral is one of the tallest in the world!).
- Beer drinkers who like their beer served in tiny glasses (but don’t worry, they keep refilling them), instead of the big ones down in Munich.
- Vibe: Friendly, fun, and a little bit tipsy.
- Must-Try: A cold glass of Kölsch and a plate of Himmel und Ääd (potatoes with apple sauce and blood sausage).
Dresden – For the History and Baroque Architecture Fans
Dresden is sometimes called “the Florence of the Elbe” because of its stunning baroque buildings. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, the city has been beautifully rebuilt and offers a mix of history, art, and scenic river views. You’ll love it, if this describes you:
- People who love classical music and art (Semperoper, Old Masters Gallery).
- Travelers who want to see impressive historic architecture (Zwinger Palace, Frauenkirche).
- Those who enjoy strolling along a river with a coffee in hand.
- Vibe: A bit posh, a bit intellectual, but still charming.
- Must-Try: Eierschecke (a delicious layered cake from Saxony).
Heidelberg – For the Romantics and Fairytale Dreamers
If you want to feel like you just stepped into a storybook, Heidelberg is the place for you. With its stunning castle ruins, old-world charm, and scenic riverside location, it’s the definition of romantic Germany. That being said, it’s perfect for:
- Hopeless romantics (or just people who love a good castle view).
- Literature and philosophy lovers (this city inspired Goethe and Mark Twain!).
- People who appreciate cobblestone streets and cute cafés.
- Vibe: Old-school romance, perfect for daydreaming.
- Must-Try: Studentenkuss (a local chocolate praline, literally called “student kiss”).
But honestly, no matter where you go, you’ll enjoy it – I promse.
