That’s a trick question; the answer is anywhere.
On a more useful note, though, it depends on what you are looking for! Are you out for something romantic, something adventurous, something educational? Germany’s got lots of amazing cities that are perfect for just a small weekend city break – either just by yourself, with family or friends or, well, with your partner.
And whilst Paris usually gets all the credit for being the city of love, Germany is quietly siting in the brackground, saying: “Hold my beer…”
Looking for some fairy tale romance?
Let’s start with the ultimate romantic destination. Neuschwanstein Castle is so ridiculously pretty that even Disney used it as inspiration for Cinderella’s castle. Nestled in the Bavarian Alps, it looks like something straight out of a storybook—perfect for couples who want to feel like royalty for a day. Here’s what I recommend:
- Wander hand-in-hand through the castle halls (and debate whether you’d survive as medieval nobility).
- Hike up to Marienbrücke, the famous bridge overlooking the castle, for peak romantic views.
- Bonus points if one of you dramatically declares, “We shall build a castle together!”.
Hipster love birds?
Berlin might not scream “romantic getaway,” but hear me out. This city is for couples who love cool bars, art, and getting lost in quirky neighbourhoods. If you don’t necessarily want to go for the classic romance, Berlin’s the place to be for something alternative, a little bit edgy – but still unbelievably cute.
- Take a sunset stroll along the Spree River—because nothing says romance like industrial-chic backdrops.
- Visit the East Side Gallery and leave your own little love note on the Berlin Wall.
- Explore hidden cocktail bars—order each other surprise drinks (trust me, it’s fun).
The romantic road
Yes, we in Germany literally have a route called The Romantic Road. It’s a 400km scenic drive packed with medieval towns, vineyards, and enough cute little cafés to make you fall in love all over again. It’s ideal for couples that enjoy slow travel, wine and the occasional really dramatic sunset. Oh, and it’s also close to Neuschwanstein! Here you could:
- Stay in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a town so adorable it looks fake.
- Wine tasting in Würzburg—because nothing says romance like getting slightly tipsy on German wine.
- Rent a car and road-trip together.
Nature lovers?
If your idea of romance involves cosy cabins, deep forests, and eating way too much cake, the Black Forest is your spot. It’s definitely my choice of something romantic. We’ve got lots of stunning landscapes in Germany, but this one is an excellent location to start with.
- Hike through mystical forests (and pretend you’re in a Brothers Grimm fairy tale).
- Stay in a traditional guesthouse with wooden beams and crackling fireplaces.
- Try authentic Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (Black Forest Cake)—because chocolate and cherries are basically aphrodisiacs – as we, uh, all now.
Sure, Germany’s not the first place you think of for a romantic trip, but it’s definitely one worth considering. If you want some more suggestions on where to visit, have a look at this or this!
