The best sweets in England

Okay. So I talked about the best sweets you can find in Germany, but – of course – I’ll give you my esteemed opinion of British sweets – or, well, particularly those I can find in England. Just clarifying this in case I anger anyone north or west of me.

This list is absolutely subjective and I at no point in time will I hide that fact. However, if you’re visiting England and are looking for some recommendations (or do-nots), then here we go!

Biscuits & brownies

That’s a really lovely header – it sounds nice spoken out loud, doesn’t it? Ah, do I love alliterations. Anyway! So we all know of the British love for biscuits. And this love means, that they have a broad variety of them. The biscuit section of their supermarkets are astonishing and there are quite a few that are just extraordinarily lovely. I, personally, love a viennese or a ginger nut – but honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything.

Next, their brownies. Now I do think that Brits suck at cake (fight me!), but one thing the are nailing are these delicious little bombs of dense chocolate. And you’ll find them everywhere. I think because they know their cake sucks otherwise (again, fight me!). But genuinely, if you find yourself on a market somewhere, there will be dozens of brownie stalls waiting for you, filled with three-days-worth of calories in form of a brown square. Pick one. They’re amazing.

Chocolate & bars

If you want a little bit of chocolate, there are dozens to choose from. You’ve got the international classics, of course, that I’d assume you find in quite a lot of places – Snickers, Mars, KitKat, etc. – but there are some national ones, too. Now here’s the thing. England has two big chocolate brands: Cadbury and Galaxy. I personally very much dislike the taste of Cadbury (I think it’s one of those where you can really taste the sugar), but it’s the brand with the much higher variety when it comes to bars, and, to be fair, some of them are decent. I personally enjoy the Crunchie (with honeycomb!) and Wispa (air bubbly choc. If you find a golden one, even better – that one’s got caramel on top!).

If you want your chocolate not necessarily in bar form, I recommend going for Galaxy instead – Minstrels have a very lovely taste to them. Poppets are fun-shaped goodies and – oh, and if you like chocolate with orange, do yourself the biggest favour and grab a Terry’s Orange. You’re welcome.

Traditional sweets

Britain also has a lot of old fashioned sweets and even has quite a few sweet shops still in existence, where you can pick what you want out of jars and fill up your own little sweet bag! If you’re somewhere near one, I definitely recommend it. The variety in those is obviously ginormous, but I personally recommend Lemon Sherbets – tiny little yellow balls with lemon powder in them. Absolutely delicious! Other than that, pick what your heart desires.

Crisps.

So here’s the thing. Crisps (or chips, if you’re.. well, from anywhere else on this planet) are great. Love them. But English ones are odd. Even though they have a massive variety of brands, they still always end up being the same, somehow. Or maybe it’s just because they are lacking the best flavour, which is, of course, paprika.

That being said, Brits love their crisps either salty/vinegary, cheesy/oniony – or meat flavoured. Prawn cocktail, if you’re fancy. But be prepared for a lot of bacon, chicken, steak, whateveryoucanthinkof paired with herbs. You can’t really go wrong with any of them, though! My favourite though? Wotsits. If you like it cheesy.
