Something a little bit different today; my homebrew Dungeons & Dragons campaign turned two years old yesterday (yey!) and we celebrated by slaying the almighty Confetti Dragon.
I like to reward my players, especially if they are clever, so here’s why the dragons are fun: they spawn piñatas, which will drop quite a little bit of lovely loot. If they are clever enough, they’ll quickly figure out that for them to get the most out of the encounter, they’ll have to spawn/kill as many of those as possible, while not slaying the dragon or die themselves. Essentially, the longer you keep the confetti dragon alive, the more loot you’ll get out of it. It’s a nice challenge for the party to figure out how much they can take or not – high risk, high reward.
It’s entirely up to you as the DM how you reward the players, but this is what I did – after each exploded piñata, I let them roll on this D100 table. Tweak, strengthen or weaken this as you want, of course. The gems are essentially blank cheques for items of the corresponding rarity:

1D100 PP and 1 clean snow white glass-like gem (common)
1 moss green gem that seems to have a spiraling core (uncommon)

A smooth blue gem that reacts to your warmth, glowing turquoise (rare)
3D100 PP and 1 smooth blue gem (rare)
1 deep purple gem, sparkling even without light penetrating it (very rare)
